What is Positive Parenting?

Positive parenting is a style of parenting that focuses on building and maintaining positive relationships between parent and child. It cultivates an environment where communication, empathy, respect, and collaboration are valued. Rather than relying on punishments or negative reinforcement to shape behavior, positive parenting offers positive discipline strategies like positive reinforcement and setting boundaries in partnership with the child. It also seeks to provide encouragement while helping children develop independence and problem-solving skills that they can use throughout their entire lives. Positive parenting can help create loving relationships between parent and child as well as foster positive self-esteem in children.

In my experience, positive parenting is a beautiful, meaningful way to parent.

What are the Benefits of Positive Parenting?

1. Positive parenting can help children feel safe and secure.

This style of parenting creates an environment that promotes positive feelings such as safety, security, and self-confidence. By creating a secure space where children are free to be themselves – to make mistakes, to communicate openly – you are giving them the strength and security they need to feel safe and secure in a world that isn’t always safe or secure.

2. It can help children develop self-esteem and confidence.

By teaching children that it’s okay to make mistakes, and that their parents believe in them and support them no matter what – positive parenting instills self-esteem and confidence. Praising achievements allows children to gain the confidence they need to tackle challenges head-on. Allowing room for mistakes and errors cultivates resilience along the way.

3. It can lead to better communication skills.

Positive parenting, at its core, means creating an encouraging environment where parents talk to their children openly, and encourage children to do the same. This positive reinforcement creates a foundation for better communication skills later on in life . When parents allow and encourage open dialogue, children develop better communication skills.

4. It teaches children to handle big emotions in a healthy way.

The #1 rule of positive parenting? All emotions are valid. By embodying this, children learn to identify, trust, and resolve their big emotions (and their small ones). Positive parenting helps create an environment in which children can express their feelings and learn how to effectively communicate them.

5. Positive parenting helps create a strong bond between parent and child.

My favorite benefit of positive parenting. By focusing on positive reinforcement, positive discipline, and plenty of open communication – parents can create a strong relationship based on trust and mutual respect. Additionally, positive parenting encourages children to express themselves openly and honestly, allowing the parent to better understand their needs, interests, values and emotions.
